SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
— Sanford Health’s chief nursing officer, Erica DeBoer, RN, MA, CCRN-K, CNL, will provide a keynote presentation at the 39th annual National Oncology Conference of the Association of Community Cancer Centers on Oct. 14 in Palm Beach, Fla.

The focus of her presentation will be on Sanford’s efforts in deploying a data-driven approach in managing clinical workforce scheduling and staffing needs. The organization has been working toward automating schedules for the past several years, and this year, began partnering with Flexwise with the goal of implementing a more flexible staffing model.

“We are leveraging data and innovation to not only help manage patient care and staffing needs in the short-term but also to be able to plan for the future, so that we can build a more resilient and sustainable workforce,” said Erica DeBoer, chief nursing officer at Sanford Health. “Evidence and experience show that having the right number of nurses, with the right skills, in the right place, at the right time improves health outcomes and the quality of care delivered.”

Sanford’s nursing leadership, enterprise data analytics, and innovation and commercialization teams are using artificial intelligence and data analytic tools to enable nursing leaders in Bismarck and Fargo, North Dakota, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to schedule clinical staff based on patient demand forecasting.

This technology not only helps solve workforce challenges, but it also enhances nurse satisfaction and improves patient quality outcomes.
