SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Power of Hope Radiothon in Aberdeen is set to take over the airwaves on November 9 and 10 to share stories of hope and courage, told by local kids and their families. 100% of every gift given during the Power of Hope Radiothon presented by NVC will go through the Sanford Health Foundation to help kids and their families who count on the Sanford Children’s Hospital.

Sanford Children’s Hospital is the only freestanding children’s hospital in the Dakotas, and the only Children’s Miracle Network dedicated hospital in South Dakota. Sanford Children’s in Sioux Falls has 135 providers in 35 different pediatric specialties ready to treat kids from all over the region. That includes 12-year-old Avett, who lives in Aberdeen.

When Avett was 7 years old, he was taken to Sanford Aberdeen because he was having trouble breathing and his vision started to go black. He was quickly flown to Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls to be seen by some of the specialists there, where they diagnosed him with a rare type of T-cell lymphoma. They also found fluid building in his lungs and around his heart, so they placed drains to relieve the pressure. At the same time, Avett immediately began three weeks of aggressive cancer treatment in the hospital. He’s in 6th grade now and is in remission, which his family is grateful for.

These are the types of stories listeners will hear from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the radiothon on Sunny 97.7, 106.7 The Point, or Pheasant Country 103.7. Last year, more than 430 kids from Brown County sought care at Sanford Children’s Hospital for a variety of reasons, including broken bones and rare cancers.

Donations made during the radiothon support services like child life and spiritual care for the entire family, financial assistance to help families with meals, mileage, and lodging, and lifesaving equipment like pediatric IV carts. People are able to donate now online or wait until November 9 or 10 to call 605-725-5437. Listeners will be able to triple their donation on November 9 if they call and donate between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., which is during a triple match challenge.

The Aberdeen Wings Hockey team will keep the momentum going into the weekend of making a difference for local kids. On Saturday, November 12, the Aberdeen Wings players will wear a special jersey for their game that night against the North Iowa Bulls. The jersey was designed in honor of the Sanford Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network. After the game, they will be auctioned off, and the money raised will be donated through the Sanford Health Foundation to help kids and their families who travel all over the region to seek care at Sanford Children’s Hospital. Avett will also drop the puck for the game.

The Sanford Health Foundation inspires philanthropy to power Sanford Health’s work of health, healing, and comfort. 100% of every dollar raised helps deliver compassionate patient-centered care and drive medical research and collaboration to accelerate bold solutions for a brighter tomorrow.
