Meet Heather
Dr. Karu attended the Sanford School of Medicine in Vermillion, SD. She underwent her general surgery training at Michigan State University in Kalamazoo, Michigan and then went on to complete her plastic surgery training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. She is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Her philosophy is to provide patient focused compassionate and individualized care to patients undergoing mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer in an effort to regain normalcy and positively impact their quality of life.
Dr. Karu specializes in the care of breast cancer patients including immediate and delayed reconstruction as well as patients requiring revision reconstruction. She participates in breast cancer research and serves on committees for the Edith Sanford Breast Center. She is a clinical assistant professor for the Sanford School of Medicine. She has practiced at Sanford Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery clinic in Sioux Falls, SD since 2006.
Dr. Karu is married and has two children. In her free time, she and her family enjoy traveling, cooking, running and spending time at the lake.
