Excellence in care

As part of a new federal rule put in place to promote transparency, all health care systems will now post their prices online. Sanford Health has financial advisors already available to call and give patients an accurate out-of-pocket price, after insurance.

Sanford Health is part of a consortium of 12 health systems called Civica Rx that is focused on reducing the occurrence of drug shortages in an effort to hold down costs and create more predictable supplies in order to better serve patients.

Sanford Health in the news

The story of the affiliation between Sanford Health and The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society was picked up by a number of news outlets, including Modern Healthcare, Beckers Hospital Review, Sioux Falls Business, the Argus Leader, KELO-TV, The Forum, and KFYR-TV.

Research frontiers

Sanford Pharmacy and Infectious Disease Physicians teamed up to publish national guidance on Clostridium difficile prevention. The conclusions of this in-depth review demonstrated that robust hygiene strategies, diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship, and particular prophylaxis maneuvers can effectively reduce C. difficile infection in intensive care units. Dave Leedahl (Fargo, Pharmacy Manager) and Dr. Avish Nagpal (Fargo, Infectious Disease) published this work in Pharmacotherpy on December 3 as part of a special issue in preventative care strategies in the ICU. “This review meets a critical need for both clinicians and administrators nationally to focus on preventative strategies that actually work to reduce C. difficile burden,” says Leedahl. “This published work also addresses several items that may fail to change outcomes but are frequently employed by hospitals and tend to distract health care teams away from strategies that have stronger evidence.” The publication can be found online here.

Creative philanthropy

Sanford Luverne (Minnesota) received $39,000 from a trust to offset costs for a new ambulance garage. All funding sources have been finalized and pledge payments are underway.

In the statehouse

Sanford Health sent two of its employees to state legislatures. Kristin Roers is serving the North Dakota Senate in Bismarck and Doug Barthel returns to the South Dakota House of Representatives in Pierre. Both have indicated that a sizable number of bills will touch on health care and that their backgrounds will serve them well.

Sanford Health is constructing a new clinic on the grounds of the Sanford Sports Complex in northwest Sioux Falls. The building will not only function as a Sanford Acute Care and Orthopedic Fast Track Clinic, increasing care provision and convenience for that expanding area of Sioux Falls and neighboring communities, it will also serve as the headquarters for the newly relocated Summit League.
