Sanford Health physician Alla Zamulko, M.D., Ph.D., was only in high school when she discovered her passion for medicine, but later on she came to discover a second passion for people as well.
What do you do at Sanford Health?
I am a physician at the Sanford Women’s Internal Medicine Clinic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, specializing in women’s health. Not only do I do routine physical exams, preventative care and treat simple medical problems, but I also diagnose and treat varieties of very complex and rare medical problems that require extensive knowledge of many aspects of medicine. I provide counseling and patient education with a very personalized approach.
As a clinical professor of medicine at Sanford School of Medicine, I work with internal medicine residents and students in a clinical setting. They get to see patients with me as a part of their education and medical school requirements.
How did you end up in this career field?
I developed a passion for medicine when I was in high school. It’s enjoyable to see my patients every day and it’s very important for me to connect with them. I like being in primary care because I get to develop long-term relationships with patients and their families. Sometimes I may have three generations in my exam room and they are all my patients.
Why did you choose to work for Sanford Health?
I have been a member of the medical staff at Sanford USD Medical Center (formerly Sioux Valley Hospital) since 1998 when I came to Sioux Falls for my internal medicine residency at the University of South Dakota. The women’s internal medicine clinic at Sanford Health is where I started working over eight years ago. I feel that Sanford Health provides very good support for physicians and patients. We have state-of-the-art technology, multiple specialists and excellent hospitals and clinics. We have a dedicated team of physicians and health care providers who work together in a caring and compassionate way.
What do you like most about working in this department?
The people I work with. We are very tightly knit, cooperative and supportive of one another. We are willing to help each other on a professional, as well as personal level. The healthy, professional atmosphere makes each day fly by, and our patients notice the positive energy and attitude.
What’s a moment that made you proud of the work that you’re doing here?
Every day stands out. I love going to work every day. Sanford Health has a very personalized approach when it comes to helping patients. I can’t think of any specific moment because every moment is special. When patients come in and we diagnose them with rare diseases or help them with personal problems, they hug you like you are family. That is what makes it worth coming to work every day. Each day is special to me.
